NDPA in 2026: what compliance actually looks like now

When the Nigeria Data Protection Act came into force, most early compliance work was paperwork. Policies drafted, registers filled in, posters printed. Two years in, the regulator is asking a very different set of questions.

The shift is from documentation to demonstration. A privacy policy on your website is no longer enough. Organisations are being asked to show, in operational detail, how personal data moves through their systems and how rights requests actually get handled.

In practice, the organisations doing well in 2026 share three things: a data map that is genuinely up to date, a DPO with real authority inside the business, and an incident response plan that has been rehearsed at least once.

Everything else (DPIAs, vendor reviews, cross-border assessments) falls into place once those three are sorted. Without them, compliance paperwork starts drifting from reality within one quarter.

The good news? For most organisations this is not a heavy lift. It is a quarterly habit rather than a one-off project. And it pays for itself the first time a regulator, customer, or buyer asks a hard question.
